Jessup is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located in Howard County, Maryland, United States. Jessup is situated between the cities of Baltimore and Washington D.C. The population of Jessup was 7,137 according to the 2020 United States Census.
Jessup has several high-security correctional facilities, including the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women and the Maryland Correctional Institution. The area also has several industrial parks, including the National Business Park and Gateway Business Park, which have many warehouses and distribution centers.
Jessup is bordered by the cities of Laurel and Savage, and its close proximity to major highways such as Interstate 95 and Maryland Route 32 has made it a popular location for commerce and distribution.
The community is named after the Reverend Henry Jessup, who was a Presbyterian missionary in the Middle East. Jessup's original downtown area was a stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Today, it is mainly a suburban residential area with some commercial development.
